From spirituals and gospel, we get the blues, and this “Have You Heard?” installment shines a light on a few of the artists who tell stories of love, loss, longing, and life. The work songs of sharecroppers and lumber mill workers emerged the blues, and NMAAM’s Crossroads gallery traces its origins from the Deep South to urban cities in the north during the Great Migration. This installment salutes early blues pioneers like Robert Johnson, BB King, and Bessie Smith, and modern blues innovators like Robert Randolph & The Family Band and Shameika Copeland.
